In some ways, “My Funny Valentine” is an unlikely song to have endured since the 1930’s… it is a rather atypical love song, imbued as it is with the rich irony and whimsy of its creative lyricist, Lorenz Hart. Back when it was (almost) possible to have an advertising-supported jazz radio station, radio station KJAZ, Alameda, California, would, on Valentine’s Day, play nothing but “My Funny Valentine” for 24 hours and not play the same version twice. Girls singers? Everybody!
