Blue in Green

In 1959, Bill Evans and Miles Davis collaborated on the famed Kind of Blue album. Scholars have shown that Evans was responsible for composing some of the tunes from that classic album, most notably the ballad, “Blue in Green.” In this episode we take a look at the inspiration behind the creation of this marvelous, elegiac composition.

Lee Konitz, Improviser

Improvisation is at the heart of  jazz, and throughout its history there have been many great improvisers, but perhaps none has been truer to the ideals of pure improvisation than alto saxophonist Lee Konitz. We recently lost Lee to Covid-19, at the age of 92, after a 75-year career as one our leading saxophonists. In this episode we take a look at how Lee approached improvisation, and how he was inspired by several of his heroes, including Lester Young, Lennie Tristano, and Charlie Parker.

Milt Jackson—Bags’ Groove

There is no question about it… Milt Jackson revolutionized the way the vibraphone was played in jazz, and continues, twenty years after his death to be considered the modern master of the instrument, influencing everyone who has followed.

As writer Don Heckman wrote in Jackson’s obituary in 1999, “Jackson gave language and voice to the vibraphone–a totally touch-dependent assemblage of metal bars and tubes. Without him, the instrument would have remained a jazz stepchild with no capacity for the sort of bent tones and contrasting timbres essential to jazz expressiveness.”

Poet Billy Collins on Jazz & Poetry—part 1

Billy Collins is a modern poetry phenomenon. The former U.S., and New York State, Poet Laureate, Collins is one of the most-read poets anywhere—and also happens to be a lifelong jazz fan. In this episode, and in a second to follow next week, he and Bob Hecht talk about the interrelationships of music and poetry, he reads a number of his jazz-related poems, and we hear some of the jazz pieces that have inspired him.

Billy Collins is the author of numerous books of poetry, and in addition to his poet laureate honors, his awards include the Mark Twain Prize for Humor in Poetry, as well as fellowships from the National Endowment for the Arts, the Guggenheim Foundation, and the New York Foundation of the Arts. Billy Strayhorn’s “Blood Count”
